| H. Bruce Humberstone: Tarzan and the Lost Safari (GB 1957). P: Sol Lesser, Distr: MGM, with Gordon Scott (Tarzan), Yolande Donlan (Gamage Dean) and Betta St. John (Diana Penrod). The 19th film in the MGM-distributed Tarzan series that started with Tarzan the Ape Man (1932). The first Tarzan film released in colour. Filmed in Nairobi. Not based on a specific Edgar Rice Burroughs novel but including a brief reference to Tarzan's origin, with Opar as a setting, and a lion called Numa. The second of five Tarzan films starring Gordon Scott, the successor of Lex Barker and the husband of Vera Miles (his costar in Tarzan's Hidden Jungle, 1955). Gordon Scott started playing Tarzan as an inarticulate brute like Johnny Weissmuller but ended up playing him as an intelligent ape-man like Burroughs intended. Gordon Scott was the only actor to play Tarzan in both styles. |
