Berlin Film Festival 17 Feb - 2 March 1987

Med Hondo: Sarraounia (BF/MT/FR 1986) starring Aï Keïta as Queen Sarraounia in the beautiful and grandiose anti-colonialist epic of African freedom fight. In Technovision and Fujicolor. Rouben Mamoulian (1897-1987) was still alive during the Berlin tribute but did not attend it. Instead, we saw the recent Philip Jenkinson interview with him. I included in my MMM Film Guide of 1000 (later 1100) best films: Applause, Love Me Tonight, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, City Streets, Blood and Sand and The Mark of Zorro.

It was amazing that Mamoulian was so brilliant and assured since the very start of his own film career and the early years of sound film in general when everything was clumsy and awkward. He was formative in so many genres and idioms: the musical (Applause), the gangster film (City Streets), the horror film (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), out-Lubitsching Lubitsch in Love Me Tonight, out-Sternberging Sternberg  in The Song of Songs (with Dietrich) and out-Stillering Stiller in Queen Christina (with Garbo), pioneering in Technicolor (Becky Sharp), launching new stars (William Holden in Golden Boy) and superbly remaking the silent classics The Mark of Zorro and Blood and Sand in Technicolor. In Silk Stockings, Mamoulian did not out-Lubitsch the Lubitsch of Ninotchka, but Cyd Charisse and Fred Astaire were at their greatest, and it was a brilliant ending to the master of the Broadway and Hollywood musical.

Tengiz Abuladze: ვედრება / Vedreba / Molba (SU-GE 1967). Black and white in Sovscope. We had a mission of screening Soviet films shelved during the Brezhnev era, newly released during Glasnost by the Conflict Commission. This Georgian masterpiece was first screened in Orion in February 1987.

Francesco Maselli: Gli sbandati / [The Abandoned / The Lost Ones] (IT 1955) in our tribute to Lucia Bosè. Her greatest performance is as the Jewish partisan Lucia in this tragic masterpiece from wartime Italy in the year 1943. It takes place in the countryside around Milan.

Andrei Tarkovsky in memoriam

"Andrei Tarkovsky Sculpted in Time". Born 4 April 1932 Zavrazhye, Ivanovo Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Died 29 Dec 1986 Paris, France. I wrote a review of Tarkovsky's literary credo, Sculpting in Time (1986), for Helsingin Sanomat. The dress rehearsal was on 6 Sep 1986.

The film concert was on 7 Sep 1986.

The start of the film concert on 7 Sep was postponed from 14 pm till 16 pm at short notice due to force majeure. Urho Kekkonen (1900-1986), President of Finland in 1956-1982, died on 31 August 1986. His funeral cortege passed the Finlandia Hall on Mannerheimintie at the time when the film concert was originally scheduled.

Carl Davis was assisted by Paul Wing.

The event took place in the presence of Kevin Brownlow, to whom we paid a tribute at Cinema Orion.

The event was organized by Helsinki Festival in collaboration with the Finnish Film Archive. In charge on behalf of the Helsinki Festival was Veijo Varpio. The primus motor was Peter von Bagh. After he left the Finnish Film Archive in 1985, I followed as the contactperson.

The score arranged and composed by Carl Davis.

Napoléon promoted to commander of the Army of the Interior - during the disarmament a young boy visits Napoléon and asks for the sword of his father who was executed during the terror: Vicomte de Beauharnais who sacrificed himself to save his wife Joséphine, a mistress of Barras - Barras and Joséphine make an agreement: Napoléon is promoted to the commander of the army of Italy, and Joséphine agrees to marry Napoléon - the Forgotten Wedding: Napoléon forgets his own wedding and arrives hours late to the ceremony - the Double Wedding Night: the tender love of Napoléon and Joséphine and the imaginary union of Violine Fleuri with her Napoléon memorabilia - at the National Convention, Napoléon meets the ghosts of the Revolution - the beginning of the Italian Campaign: the army is demoralized, the officers treat the upstart from Paris with condescension - but Napoléon instils to his army, Les Mendiants de la Gloire, an invincible fighting spirit.

Berlin Film Festival 1986

Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina were guests of honour at the Berlin Film Festival in 1986. Ginger and Fred was their last film together. At the press conference the moderators and the journalists were so clueless that the couple took the situation in their own hands and gave us a perfect show. I was struck by the high pitch of Fellini's voice, and the deep grumble of Masina's.

Robert J. Flaherty: Moana (US 1926). On 13 October 1985 Monica Flaherty visited Arsenal and showed her personal sonorized 16 mm print of Moana for which she had created an authentic Samoan music and sound track, partly based on her memories of Samoan songs she had learned as a child. She gave her introductions in German.

The first retrospective of women directors in Finland, in the autumn program of 1985 at the Cinema Orion of the Finnish Film Archive. This was the last film archive season programmed and signed by Peter von Bagh. I wrote the series introduction to the program booklet, the first one to which I contributed full time.

Frank Wysbar: Fährmann Maria (DE 1936) starring Sybille Schmitz as the ferrywoman Maria. William K. Everson in his Classics of the Horror Film singled out this movie as the last in the distinguished lineage of Weimar cinefantastique still persisting during Hitler. Wysbar soon went into Hollywood exile.

11 June 1985  Der Student von Prag (1926). Not necessarily better than the original film adaptation. The final climax is very effective. The escape of the double into the darkness on a dark road surrounded by swaying trees. Baldwin shoots his mirror image and manages to see himself in the splinters before he dies.
