Ihmisen osa production notes quoted by HIFF: "Pekka Malmikunnas (Hannu-Pekka Björkman) is a bankrupt, penniless man, who has managed to convince his family that he is still the CEO of a large IT company. Keeping up this facade has become something of a full-time job for him."

"When Pekka’s parents Salme and Paavo (Leena Uotila, Asko Sarkola) come to the city for an unexpected visit, Pekka is in trouble. In order to dispel any doubts, Pekka throws his parents and his grown-up sisters (Ria Kataja, Armi Toivanen) a lavish dinner party. There they bump into Kimmo Hienlahti (Kari Hietalahti), an even bigger smooth-talker, who finally makes Pekka realise his own impossible situation. In our Q & A after the screening Juha Lehtola stated that there are three versions of Kari Hotakainen's material: the original novel, the drama adaptation and the movie. All have been changed, all have a different viewpoint and emphasis.

I asked about the special stylized and savage satirical approach, found it rare and special in our country, comparable with commedia all'italiana and Billy Wilder, for instance. Lehtola told us that Billy Wilder was, indeed, a point of inspiration, and the production team viewed several Billy Wilder movies together. - Regarding the main theme of lying, The Lost Weekend, Ace in a Hole, and The Fortune Cookie come to mind.

The stylized approach was a challenge for the actors, who needed to keep in the stylized mode all the time. With one exception: Sini, played by the young Della McLoud. Sini is the only one who does not lie, who can be herself. (Another Greta Thunberg association).

The theme of lying is taken to philosophical levels. Associations run from schools of sophists and rhetoricians discussed by Socrates and Plato to today's political campaigns fuelled by fake news and the social media. "Speech is the weapon", teaches Kimmo Hienlahti. Pekka has cut his tongue, but in the finale Pekka becomes Kimmo's spokesman. "How can I get out of this?" is Pekka's repeated question. "Be yourself". "Which one?"


Kari Hotakaisen romaani Ihmisen osa avasi satiirisen trilogian, joka kuvaa, miten raha ja työelämän muutokset mullistavat arjen. Ihmisen osa sai suurmenestyksen teatteriversionakin. Elokuva on itsenäinen tulkinta samasta aiheesta.

Visuaalis-musiikillinen näkemys on vangitseva. Dokumentaristina tunnettu kuvaaja J-P Passi irtautuu arkirealismista, ja tanskalaissäveltäjä Halfdan E luo omalaatuisen musiikkimaailman. Ohjaaja Juha Lehtola ankkuroi teoksen henkilövetoiseen tarinankerrontaan.

Pohjana on klassinen komedia-aihe: maalaisvanhemmat (Leena Uotila, Asko Sarkola) järkyttyvät kaupungissa saadessaan selville totuuden lapsukaisistaan. Maija (Armi Toivanen) on väittänyt, että hänen elämänkumppaninsa on suomalainen mies nimeltä Mika. Pekka (Hannu-Pekka Björkman) on uskotellut olevansa IT-menestyjä. Helena (Ria Kataja), ainoa, joka ei valehtele, osoittautuu sydämettömäksi muutosjohtajaksi.

Keskiöön nousevan Pekan elämänvalhe kohoaa fantastisiin sfääreihin, ja silti hän säilyttää arvokkuutensa nöyryytysten pyörteissä. Viimein Pekka tapaa vertaisensa, sanan ammattilaisen Kimmo Hienlahden (Kari Hietalahti), jolle puhe on pelkästään manipulaation väline.

Ihmisen osa on suomalaisessa elokuvassa harvinainen tapaus: villi ja makaaberi satiiri. Tulos on täysosuma vaikeassa ja tyylitajua vaativassa lajissa.
