A few years later she declared privacy as an outdated concept, renamed herself Eva and published her first diary entry online. Quickly Eva became an Internet star, allowing the world to watch her grow up. Today Eva is in her early twenties, fluctuating between her offline life, where she recently defined herself an anarchist vagabond and a feminist sex worker and her online persona, iconified as an archetype of authenticity."

Searching Eva is a provocative contribution to some of the most puzzling questions of our age. What does identity mean in the age of the internet and the social media? It is easy to get lost in cyberspace. But it might also be possible to find oneself there, or at least keys to the equation of existence in the world today.
Although the film is German and Eva is Italian, the language spoken is English, the anonymous, impersonal, flavourless variation that is our lingua franca today, itself defying definitions of identity.
Towards the end I was thinking about the identity quest and the problematization of sex and gender in Weimar cinema, also because Eva sports a wig that reminds me a little of Louise Brooks in Die Büchse der Pandora and Tagebuch einer Verlorenen. She defied definitions as does Eva.
Towards the end options include: write a suicide note, go to the beach, and start a revolution. I guess Eva is going to pick the third alternative.

In the Q&A (in English) Pia Hellenthal told us that the film was for a long time in the making. "It was started in 2014 and finished in February 2019. Eva was happy about the film. You cannot place her in a box. I learned a lot from Eva, from her way of looking what a woman is. Who I am. It was a liberating thought, a big thing I learned from her, about illness brought by work, religion and body in the capitalistic society. During the filming, I developed a better understanding of the male gaze. The sex scenes were filmed with Eva's actual boyfriend, and the sugar daddy was played by an actor. The drug scenes took place while we were hanging around." (The quotes are not verbatim).

”En ole vastuussa muiden katseista”, sanoo Eva Collé, Berliinissä asuva 24-vuotias bloggaaja, runoilija ja malli. Sekä ihailevia että vihaisia tuijotuksia keräävä feministi on lisäksi seksityöläinen, huumeaddikti ja artisti, omien sanojensa mukaan myös autisti. Monta määrettä, joiden Eva ei kuitenkaan halua määrittävän itseään.
Dokumentaristi Pia Hellenthal törmäsi Evan kirjoituksiin pari vuotta sitten. Jo 14-vuotiaana perustamassaan blogissa Eva on puhunut suoraan muun muassa seksityöstä. Arkeen kuuluu työn lisäksi jatkuva muuttaminen ja muuttuminen: Eva – jonka nimi ei oikeasti ole Eva – ei jaksa kiinnittyä paikkoihin, ihmisiin eikä identiteetteihin. Peruukin voi vaihtaa päivittäin, ja seksuaalisuus jos jokin on liukuvaa. Yksityisyyttä ei tarvita, koska huomenna voi taas olla joku muu.
Festivaaleja tiuhaan kiertänyt Searching Eva näyttää ensikatsauksella Vice-henkiseltä välähdykseltä italialaisten heroinistivanhempien kapinallistyttären ”vapaasta” elämästä. Mikään berliiniläisiä eksentrikkoja esittelevä lifestyle-dokumentti se ei kuitenkaan ole. Hellenthal on rakentanut näyttävän pohdinnan yksityisyydestä, menneisyydestä ja sosiaalisesta mediasta, jossa ihmiset tirkistelevät Evaa ja Eva ihmisiä. Rehellisiä seksi- ja huumekohtauksia rytmittävät Evan ja hänen lukijoidensa viestinvaihdot. Särmikästä naista palvotaan ja haukutaan, ja hänen olemassaoloaan myös epäillään. Ja se, kuka Eva ”todella” on, ei missään nimessä selviäkään – Searching Eva ei ole muotokuva Eva Collésta vaan raikas ja sirpaleinen kooste häilyvistä haluista ja toiveista, jotka karkaavat heti, kun ne lausuu ääneen.

Seit sie 14 war, hält Eva Privatsphäre für altmodisch. Mit unglaublicher Konsequenz lebt sie ihr Leben öffentlich und online, ständig kommentiert von ihren Fans. Ihre konservative Heimat in einer italienischen Kleinstadt und die Probleme der Eltern hat sie mit 17 Jahren auf der Suche nach Freiheit hinter sich gelassen. Wie viele Suchende ist sie in Berlin gelandet, wo sie als ewige Zwischenmieterin aus zwei großen Koffern lebt. Ihr unkonventionelles Leben und ihre offenen Bilder und Texte darüber wirken auf ihre Tumblr- und Instagram-Follower wie ein inspirierender Film, der mehr Handlungsstränge und Höhepunkte bereithält als jede Daily Soap. Eva ist nie fertig, ihr Leben steht nie still, denn sie erfindet sich stets aufs Neue: als Model, als Feministin, als queere Autorin oder als selbstbestimmte Sexarbeiterin. Ein starker Debütfilm, der zeigt, wie eine junge Angehörige der digitalen Generation ihre fragmentierte Persönlichkeit als öffentliches Spektakel inszeniert. Identität ist für Eva wie Mode, sie kann sie nach Lust und Laune wechseln. Ein Einblick in eine Welt, in der eine Kamera selbst beim Sex überhaupt kein Problem ist.
