AA: From framing and tracking we proceed to staging, and some of the clips are more obviously relevant than others, such as Kira Muratova's Two In One and Maria Luisa Bemberg's I, the Worst of All. It is intriguing to see here clips of Yulia Solntseva's magnificent-looking The Enchanted Desna; it was released in Finland on 70 mm, but no print has remained here.
One of the sub-themes in the chapter on Journey is the chase. Alice Guy appears here as one of the early directors of chase films (Course à la saucisse) and Kathryn Bigelow as one of the later masters (Point Break). Nell Shipman's weird "car Western" Something New is included. But Kinuyo Tanaka in her debut film as a director, Love Letter, shows us a chase sequence of a subtler kind. A clip from Marva Nabili's Sealed Soil convinces me that this is a film I need to see.
In the chapter on Discovery there is a chain on fantasy: Penny Marshall's Big, Alice Guy's Avenue de l'Opéra (screened backwards) and Lucile Hadžihalilović's Évolution (the boy on an island of women). Sweeter discoveries await in the end.
