Official synopsis: "The epic, four years in the making, still in production, is made up of forty “chapters” to be narrated by Tilda Swinton, Jane Fonda and other key women in cinema, still to be announced. Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema follows in the footsteps of Mark Cousins’ The Story of Film: An Odyssey, to give us a guided tour of the art and craft of the movies. Using almost a thousand film extracts from thirteen decades and five continents, Cousins asks how films are made, shot and edited; how stories are shaped and how movies depict life, love, politics, humour and death, all through the compelling lens of some of the world’s greatest directors – all of them women."

AA: Discoveries and re-discoveries: via clips from a film called The Arch we meet Cecile Tang, pioneer of the art cinema in Hong Kong. A special moment in the Conversation chapter is from Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides: the boys communicate with the virgins via phonograph records played over the telephone. In Harlan County U.S.A. the policeman learns for the first time to understand what is really going on in the miners' strike.

In the chapter on Framing there are several clips displaying the mise-en-scène of Ida Lupino. Particularly striking is Outrage, a drama about rape, a film that was never released in Finland.

The Tracking chapter ends and climaxes with an unforgettable slow documentary tracking shot by Chantal Akerman taken from Moscow after the fall of the Soviet Union. The faces and the expressions speak volumes.
