AA: La bola negra directed by the duo Los Javis (= Javier Ambrossi et Javier Calvo) is a flamboyant gay odyssey through Spanish history from the Civil War to the present time. 

It is a non-linear narrative jumping back and forth in three time zones (1932, 1937, 2017).

The original visual style of Los Javis is powerful, lavish and gorgous, at times evoking Derek Jarman (Caravaggio), le Cinéma du Look (Beineix), 1980s Music Television and erotic gay glamour photography. Copious male nudity is on display, as well as cadavers and mutilated bodies patched back to health in hospitals. Los Javis are not squeamish about gore and blood. All is held together by an intense queer gaze.

Gris Jordana brings a hyper-intense shine into his vision, lusciously recorded in photochemical 35 mm, its vivaciousness surviving in the digital transfer. I wish Christopher Nolan had succeeded in capturing more of such Mediterranean glow in The Odyssey.

Style over substance?

The politics is identity politics. It is about the fight of your right to be yourself. But this is also relevant in the fight against Fascism, which asked you to deny yourself.
