"Andrei Tarkovsky Sculpted in Time". Born 4 April 1932 Zavrazhye, Ivanovo Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. Died 29 Dec 1986 Paris, France. I wrote a review of Tarkovsky's literary credo, Sculpting in Time (1986), for Helsingin Sanomat. The dress rehearsal was on 6 Sep 1986.

The film concert was on 7 Sep 1986.

The start of the film concert on 7 Sep was postponed from 14 pm till 16 pm at short notice due to force majeure. Urho Kekkonen (1900-1986), President of Finland in 1956-1982, died on 31 August 1986. His funeral cortege passed the Finlandia Hall on Mannerheimintie at the time when the film concert was originally scheduled.

The screen was 14,5 m wide and 7,5 m high.

The screening was in 35 mm and for the triptych sequences in 35 mm and 70 mm.

The projection speed was 20 fps except 18 fps for Brienne.

The technical director of the projection was Charles Beddow (British Film Institute), assisted by Andrew Youdell (BFI).

Carl Davis was assisted by Paul Wing.

The event took place in the presence of Kevin Brownlow, to whom we paid a tribute at Cinema Orion.

The event was organized by Helsinki Festival in collaboration with the Finnish Film Archive. In charge on behalf of the Helsinki Festival was Veijo Varpio. The primus motor was Peter von Bagh. After he left the Finnish Film Archive in 1985, I followed as the contactperson.

The score arranged and composed by Carl Davis.

Napoléon promoted to commander of the Army of the Interior - during the disarmament a young boy visits Napoléon and asks for the sword of his father who was executed during the terror: Vicomte de Beauharnais who sacrificed himself to save his wife Joséphine, a mistress of Barras - Barras and Joséphine make an agreement: Napoléon is promoted to the commander of the army of Italy, and Joséphine agrees to marry Napoléon - the Forgotten Wedding: Napoléon forgets his own wedding and arrives hours late to the ceremony - the Double Wedding Night: the tender love of Napoléon and Joséphine and the imaginary union of Violine Fleuri with her Napoléon memorabilia - at the National Convention, Napoléon meets the ghosts of the Revolution - the beginning of the Italian Campaign: the army is demoralized, the officers treat the upstart from Paris with condescension - but Napoléon instils to his army, Les Mendiants de la Gloire, an invincible fighting spirit.

Berlin Film Festival 1986

Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina were guests of honour at the Berlin Film Festival in 1986. Ginger and Fred was their last film together. At the press conference the moderators and the journalists were so clueless that the couple took the situation in their own hands and gave us a perfect show. I was struck by the high pitch of Fellini's voice, and the deep grumble of Masina's.

Robert J. Flaherty: Moana (US 1926). On 13 October 1985 Monica Flaherty visited Arsenal and showed her personal sonorized 16 mm print of Moana for which she had created an authentic Samoan music and sound track, partly based on her memories of Samoan songs she had learned as a child. She gave her introductions in German.

The first retrospective of women directors in Finland, in the autumn program of 1985 at the Cinema Orion of the Finnish Film Archive. This was the last film archive season programmed and signed by Peter von Bagh. I wrote the series introduction to the program booklet, the first one to which I contributed full time.

Everson in his Classics of the Horror Film singled out this movie as the last in the distinguished lineage of Weimar cinefantastique still persisting during Hitler. Wysbar soon went into Hollywood exile.

4 June 1985  Monster on the Campus. Jack Arnold's darkest movie. An infection from a prehistoric fish turns a professor into a human beast. Violent.
11 June 1985  Der Student von Prag (1926). Not necessarily better than the original film adaptation. The final climax is very effective. The escape of the double into the darkness on a dark road surrounded by swaying trees. Baldwin shoots his mirror image and manages to see himself in the splinters before he dies.

My Elvis Presley complete records project, Christmas 1984

In 1984 in Stockholm I borrowed from my friend Jouni Suomalainen his complete collection of Elvis Presley LP's, listened to them in chronological order and copied a Christmas selection of favourite tracks on compact cassette tapes.

The conventional wisdom about Elvis was that his 1950s were great, and after the army he went downhill, but Jouni persuaded me to listen carefully to the records of the early 1960s which were his favourites. Indeed, Elvis's voice grew into its full grandeur then, but unfortunately his talent was wasted in too many worthless projects.

The 1968 comeback show was a return to form in all ways. Even his 1950s hits such as "Love Me" and "Trying To Get To You" he now sang with a new, devastating force, made greater through his better command of his voice.

The early 1960s still have a special place in my memories. It was then that Elvis sang his best traditional blues track, "Reconsider Baby", and also his most magnificent spiritual songs. His interpretation of the Swedish hymn "How Great Thou Art" ("O store Gud", 1885, "Oi herrani", lyrics by Carl G. Boberg to a Swedish folk melody) is overwhelmingly better than any other I have heard. Elvis brought the impact of Mahalia Jackson and other great black gospel singers to his version and made other white singers look pale. His voice was rich and subtle, and in his best songs there was a haunting sadness underneath.

Even his most memorable Christmas songs were blues tracks: "Merry Christmas, Baby" (1971) and "Blue Christmas" (the 1968 comeback interpretation was the best).

The selection was also based on the fact that I already had collections of Sun Records.

In 2022 at the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä I heard from Vesa Suomalainen that his brother had recently died in Uppsala, Sweden, but not from Covid. I will never forget the friendly gentleman Jouni Suomalainen. He had a distinguished side career as a street photographer all his life.

Jouni Suomalainen: " Jag blev intresserad av ’ street foto ’ när jag var ungefär 14. Min kusin som var 10 år äldre presenterade mig kameror, deras funktioner och syfte. Efter detta presenterade han gatufotografins stora namn, deras bilder gjorde ett stort intryck på mig. Han var perfektionist och duktig fotograf själv, han visade hur man håller kameran, trycker avlösaren och fotar, han tog många bilder på mig och våran familj.
