The romantic ambience of the Round-Up Club is contrasted with the cold efficiency of the armored car robbery. These scenes are pure cinema, as is the sequence in the hospital where Steve is waiting for the assassin at night, and the final confrontation (”She’s all yours now”).

Huom! Robert Siodmak tiettävästi osallistui käsikirjoituksen tekoon. Elokuvan alkuperäinen tuottaja ja ideoija, Mark Hellinger kuoli 1947, ja projekti siirtyi Universal-yhtiölle.

Huom 2! Steven Soderbergh teki elokuvasta uusversion The Underneath / Isku vasten kasvoja (1995). Austiniin, Texasiin sijoitetussa älyllisen mietiskelevässä tunnelmassa Soderbergh paljolti kyseenalaisti film noirin fatalismia. Poliisiystävä ja veli sulautettiin yhteen: psykoottiseksi poliisiveljeksi.

”The link between the opening kiss and final carefully composed death tableau resonates with the irony of a failed romantic passion. It is one of the great dramatic endings of film noir”

Se värittää mustasukkaisen pomon, Slim Dundeen johdolla suoritetun viimeisen ”suuren keikan”, ”big caperin” seksuaalisen orjuutuksen kuvaukseksi, Tappajista tutun masokistisen suhteen muunnokseksi.

Ulkokohtaukset kuvattiin valtaosin Los Angelesin vanhassa kaupunginosassa Bunker Hillissä, alueilla, jotka tuhottiin 1950-luvulla. Elämän ja kuoleman leikin ohella ainakin kaksi muuta film noirin klassikkoa sijoitti toimintansa noihin slummeksi rähjääntyneisiin muinoin niin arvokkaihin kortteleihin: Fred Zinnemannin Kenen on kosto (1948) ja Joseph Loseyn M (1951). Bunker Hill jäi kirjallisuuteen Raymond Chandlerin ja John Fanten romaanien ansiosta.

Elämän ja kuoleman leikin avaus vie suoraan tarinan ytimeen, in median res, ”kuin vatsaan survaistu veitsi” (David Thompson). Helikopteriotokset öisestä Los Angelesista johdattelevat pienen yökerhon (the Round-Up Club) parkkialueelle, Steven ja Annan salaiseen tapaamiseen, ja film noirille ominainen kohtalon ilmapiiri kiihkeine seksuaalisine kolmioasetelmineen on loihdittu esiin. ”From the start, it all went one way. It was in the cards or it was fate or a jinx or whatever you want to call it.”

Panssariauton rahojen ryöstö San Raphelon, Long Beachin tehtaalla on elokuvan tour de force, Siodmakin ekspressionismin taidonnäyte, kuin balettia. Tummat naamioidut hahmot liikkuvat pahojen aavistustensa vallassa savupommien aikaansaaman sekaannuksen keskellä. Ikkunoissa on sälekaihtimet. Ryöstön tulitaistossa haavoittunut Steve maksaa avuttomana vuoteellaan käsivarsi ja olkapää telineessä. Hänellä on syytä odottaa rikoskumppaneittensa kostoa: vinopeilin avulla hän tähyilee käytävään, josta harmittomalta vaikuttava kaupparatsu lähestyy potilasta... Francis Ford Coppola osasi Kummisedässä hyödyntää tätä jännitysjaksoa ja laventaa sen pohjalta muistettavan episodin.

Siodmakin ohella elokuvan tekijäkaartista on syytä nostaa esille käsikirjoituksen laatija Daniel Fuchs, kuvaaja Franz (Frank) Planer ja säveltäjä Milos Rozsa, kaikki film noirin olennaisia voimia. Kirjailija Fuchsin (1909–1993) muita noireja olivat The Gangster (oman romaanin Low Company pohjalta), Hollow Triumph/The Scar / Arpi, Storm Warning / Ku Klux Klaanin merkeissä ja Pakokauhun vallassa. Planer (1984–1963) oli Ufan kuvaajia ja työskennellyt mm. Max Ophulsille. Unkarilaissyntyinen Rozsa (1907–1995) kirjoitti musiikin mm. elokuviin Double Indemnity / Nainen ilman omaatuntoa, Tuhlattuja päiviä, Noiduttu, Tappajat, Alaston kaupunki ja Asfalttiviidakko.

”The big caper film”, suuren keikan kuvaukset, on gangsterifilmien kiintoisa alalaji. Sen muita merkittäviä Hollywood-edustajia ovat Walshin High Serra, Siodmakin Tappajat, Lewisin Rikosten Pyörteessä, Walshin Valkonen hehku, Hustonin Asfalttiviidakko, Kubrickin Peli on menetetty, Wisen He pakenivat huomispäivää, Tarantinon Reservoir Dogs ja John Irvinin ”melvilleläinen” City of Industry – Pelon kaupunki. Ranskassa tätä alalajia ovat kehitelleet mm. Becker, Dassin ja ennen kaikkea Melville. Joseph Losey teki Englannissa Sementtiviidakon. Keikkakuvaukset ylipäätään keskittyivät rikoksen valmisteluihin, itse rikoksen suoritukseen (Dassinin Rififi selkeimpänä esimerkkinä) taikka – useimmiten kohtalokkaisiin, tuhoisiin – jälkivaiheisiin (Reservoir Dogs, City of Industry).

Kanadalaissyntyinen Yvonne De Carlo (s. 1922) ansaitsee oman kappaleensa. (Michael Walker). De Carlo ei valitettavasti koskaan muulloin saanut Annan veroista haastetta eikä Siodmakin tasoista ohjaajaa. Annassa on proletaarista seksikkyyttä.

Viewed in Helsinki, SEA, Cinema Orion, Tuesday 3 March 1998. **** Gustave Minda, ”the Public Enemy”, escapes from prison and gets in shape for one final break. An infernal web of conflicting loyalties between criminal syndicates is spun, and the police plays the gangsters against one another. It all culminates in a tragic bloodbath. This is the long version, where everyday incidents and patient waiting build a special kind of tension which explodes in short economical bursts of action. The cinematography is grim and the ensemble of actors is first rate.

*** Visually exciting film debut by rock video director Antoine Fuqua. The visual surroundings of a passport forgery studio, car wash, photo automat and Buddhist temple are used for maximum impact. Chow Yun-Fat is convincing, although his English accent is wooden. Mira Sorvino is fine in a different role. The ultra-violence almost matches John Woo’s Hongkong efforts.

The Tarantino films so far - Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Natural Born Killers, From Dusk Till Dawn - have all been extremely violent. This one is about crime, as well, but with little explicit violence. It’s mostly about character. It has less action than the excellent Elmore Leonard adaptation Get Shorty, also influenced by Tarantino. We see Tarantino moving in the Melville direction: Le Doulos would be a point of comparison. But the visual style of Jackie Brown is flat. Another point of comparison would be Rio Bravo with its long duration, flat cinematography and emphasis on character. But Jackie Brown is much more laid back - at the risk of losing excitement. The dialogue is less flashy than before. The soundtrack CD will be worth buying. True Tarantino aficionados will want to see this film three times.

First of all, one has to be grateful to see any version of this grim work of die Neue Sachlichkeit with a moving part for Greta Garbo. But then, this film, available for decades only in incomplete versions, was painstakingly restored last year – why did we not get to see that restoration? The version seen now was the censored one, with poor pictorial quality and shown with the wrong gate (Garbo’s head was often missing). In last year’s interesting documentary Pabst wieder sehen there is a scene-by-scene comparison how the film is profoundly altered by replacing the missing scenes.

Viewed in Helsinki, SEA, Cinema Orion, Tuesday 24 February 1998. **** This film is unique in Melville’s oeuvre in many ways and deeply personal in a way apparently different from his thrillers. It is an Occupation drama with a rich texture of authentic detail. It tells the story of a strong Platonic Lesbian relationship. Children, missing from almost all other Melville films, play an important part here. The figure of the priest is one of the most memorable in the history of the cinema. He can be compared with Father O’Malley in Going My Way or preacher Gruffdydd in How Green Was My Valley. What he says is always original and profound. The French Catholic church accepted the film by the devout Atheist Melville. There is more to the film than Melville admitted. Léon Morin is a profound film about the presence of Judaism in Christianity.

It’s a classic, laconic film noir about the hitman (Lawrence Tierney) who marries a publisher’s daughter (Georgia Staples) for money. The hitman becomes a mirror for his wife’s sister (Claire Trevor) who is forced to realize the iciness of her own egoism. The story is told with bluntness worthy of a Biblical parable.

Viewed in Helsinki, SEA, Cinema Orion, Tuesday 24 February 1998. * This rare experimental Hollywood film has been seen in Finland after its premiere only once on TV (two years ago). The experiment with rigid first person point of view is famous and totally unsuccessful. Lady In the Lake is rather a lesson how a film should not be made. By abandoning the basic shot-reverse-shot method the film-makers seriously weaken true identification. The experience is strange and boring. Robert Montgomery is not a good Philip Marlowe. Marlowe should impress us more with his wit than with his gun. But Montgomery’s sense of humour is limited, and his wisecracks lack momentum. All other performances are wooden, as well. The screenwriters have built the role of Adrienne Fromsett considerably: she is a strong, ambiguous, interesting woman. In the end, however, she succumbs to the traditional role of ”Marlowe’s girl”.

This is a tough case for the NYPD, but Denzel Washington won’t give up although everybody thinks he’s gone mad. Visually the film is ambitious and worth a close look. It belongs to the same recent trend as Se7en, Copycat, and One Eight Seven.

The focus is on fucking and hookers, without transcendence. A juvenile film. A writer’s life is not cinematic, said Truffaut, still true. The best idea: the character going literally out of focus. First we see this happening to Robin Williams and then to Allen.

The villainy of Franchot Tone is rather overdone. Many characters are unbelievable, but then this is a dream film. The drum ecstacy of Elisha J. Cook, Jr. is still the highlight.

VHS projection of a cropped-to-full-frame PAL version in Helsinki, VET, Monday 16 February 1998. **** The best recent comedy together with Beavis and Butthead Do America. A James Bond spoof produced, written and performed by Mike Myers in dual role: as the super agent Austin Powers - and as his own nemesis, Dr. Evil, who is like Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s twin brother. They have both been deep-frozen in 1967 and have now a hard time adapting to 1997. Dr. Evil’s ransom threats are ridiculously small, and the swinging Austin Powers has to turn monogamous to have any impact on today’s women. The music, the colour, and the choreography are all perfectly in style.

Finnish earphone translation by Leena Talvio. Viewed in Helsinki, SEA, Orion, Thursday 12 February 1998. *** A fine melancholy thriller with which Melville wanted to demonstrate that he can direct a regular commercial film. The screenplay is nothing special, but the Melville-Alekan collaboration creates several visually exquisite passages about solitude, very much like the ones by Antonioni and Bresson in the following years.

The DVD truly makes a difference. Not only superior to VHS, it also has a stronger impact than the laserdisc. It is evident in the night scenes where a lot of detail is visible. But most importantly it has a deeper effect on the mind: the images have more staying power than the more shallow VHS images. As for the sound, I can’t find any difference, since the VHS soundtrack has reached the CD standard many years ago.

It is in the familiar, reliable style of the probably most successful Nordic film cycle, if we see the over twenty Lindgren films as such. The sunny atmosphere, the irreverence, the timeless aspects. The story could take place in the 1950s as well as today. Best of all, the child actors are good.

Danny returns from prison after 14 years, struggles to get in shape as a boxer and as a spiritual model for the boys of the ghetto. He has to fight ghosts from the past and face extreme violence. Daniel Day-Lewis looks different. No longer the gaunt youngster, he’s a grown-up man physically and spiritually. They say he does his boxing himself, and it does look impressive.

Finnish / Swedish subtitles by Jaana Wiik / Ditte Kronström. DIST: UIP Finland. Viewed in Helsinki, VET, Friday 6 February 1998. *** My favourite of the some five Grisham films I have seen. This one is the least frenetic and violent of them. It is a morality tale, told with humour and taking its time with the characters, interpreted by several first rate actors. Coppola’s flair of strong ensembles is in evidence here. It’s about the rookie lawyer defending a poor mother against a huge insurance company. The film is sober and wise and it confronts all the stereotypes about American lawyers. ”What’s wrong with ethics?” asks the young lawyer who keeps growing through the story by learning from his own mistakes. I like the film’s focus on nobility.

Viewed in Helsinki on VHS Thursday 5 February 1998. **** Brutal gangster film creates an atmosphere of terror without actually wallowing in gore. The impact is due to taut cinematic storytelling and strong production. It’s about the mob war between Chicago and Kansas City ganglords. Lee Marvin is the hitman sent to settle scores with Gene Hackman. It’s about drug traffic and prostitution where a local orphanage is used to recruit fresh young victims to be doped and prostituted. Sissy Spacek in her debut is the victim Lee Marvin saves from white slavery. The film has eerie scenes in the cornfields and amongst the sunflowers. It is like no other gangster film. Michael Ritchie truly was a master in these years.

Overrated spectacle, not up to Lubitsch’s best comedies of the same time. And the version to show would be the Enno Patalas restoration from Munich Film Museum. For instance, from this TV version, the famous final shock image – the mob playing ball with Dubarry’s severed head – was missing. Also, the interesting use of vignettes could not be appreciated in this version.

It takes place between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and South Boston: the elite and the underdog. Damon plays the boy wonder from the slums. He has become a delinquent, a multiple offender, on a serious downward spiral. He is noticed by the master mathematicist Skarsgård who finally finds for him a psychiatrist whom the boy cannot drive crazy - Robin Williams. There is true anger and true wisdom in the story. Gus Van Sant keeps developing his visual style, too, here together with his excellent DP Escoffier.

DIST: Finnkino. VHS projection in Helsinki, VET, Tuesday 20 January 1998. **** First rate animated feature succeeds in the difficult task of transcending the televisual origins of the material. Most of the Beavis and Butt-head routines are discarded. Instead, the story is based on the picaresque form. The film starts as the duo’s TV set is confiscated. During their quest of a new one they get to travel from coast to coast , become America’s Most Wanted criminals, darken the lights of Vegas, break the Hoover Dam and cause the worst freeway catastrophe in history. Well paced, with a solid soundtrack, and many good jokes.

Finnish subtitles by Riitta Piironen. Silent frame uglily cropped to Academy. With the edges cut off, the beautiful title cards turn illegible and the composition of the image is thrown off balance. Yleisradio TV2 transmission viewed in Helsinki, Sunday 18 January 1998. **** The film is one of a kind, still magnetic. One has to adjust to the twisted style to find the strange fascination and the black humour of the film. It is the first great zombie story of the cinema. This Luft / Labenski reconstruction was the best available 15 years ago, although the music and sound effects are best turned off at once. Today one should screen the 1995 Lumière Project restoration.

The Front Page (1931)

Lewis Milestone: The Front Page (US 1931). Pat O'Brien as Hildy Johnson.

072986 / G / US / 1931 / Milestone, Lewis / drama / comedy
Etusivu uusiksi / Det stora reportaget. PC: The Caddo Company. P: Howard Hughes. D: Lewis Milestone. SC: Bartlett Cormack – based on the play by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. CAST: Adolphe Menjou (Walter Burns), Pat O’Brien (Hildy Johnson), Mary Brian (Peggy Grant), Mae Clarke (Molly Malloy), Edward Everett Horton (Roy Bensinger), Slim Summerville (Irving Pincus). B&w Early Sound 1,2. 101’ /25 fps/ PAL = 105’ /24 fps/. This film was never released in Finnish cinemas nor on video. Yleisradio TV2 transmitted it in 1996 and again 11 January 1998. Transmission’s 16 mm start material had awful definition and poor sound, and the early sound aperture was uglily cropped. Viewed in Helsinki on VHS, Monday 12 January 1998. *** Because of the miserable TV print it was impossible to enjoy the film. But it is evident that this is a superbly acted version of the tough, almost horrifying, Hecht / MacArthur play. This Pre-Code version is probably the toughest of the four films based on the play, and in many ways more daring than the 1940 remake His Girl Friday. It was not such a big step for Hawks to turn Hildy into a woman. Not that Pat O’Brien is at all feminine, but in this version, too, it is obvious that the true love story is between Walter Burns and Hildy Johnson.

Viewed in Helsinki, VET, Friday 9 January 1998. *** Breathtaking, sumptuous animated historical fantasy with a strong, temperamental central character and several engrossing setpieces (the runaway train, the butterfly dream). History is played for fairytale as the Russian Revolution is crystallized in the figure of Rasputin as the Mad Monk From Hell. The animation of the fantasy elements is first rate. The human characters are wooden, Anastasia fortunately being more lively. Everybody keeps praising the Finnish dubbing of the animated films, but I find it affected and condescending. Children should not be insulted by talking down to them, on the contrary, the standards should be higher.

PD: Gene Callahan. CAST: Kirk Douglas (Eddie Anderson), Faye Dunaway (Gwen), Deborah Kerr (Florence Anderson), Richard Boone (Sam Anderson), Hume Cronyn (the lawyer), Harold Gould (the analyst). 125’. Scope. MPAA 22184. SEA / Warner Bros. print with Finnish / Swedish subtitles by Christina Kilpi / . Viewed in Helsinki, SEA, Cinema Orion, Wednesday 8 January 1998. *** The film definitely gains being seen within a week from America, America. Its protagonist is on his deathbed now, and we follow the life of his son. It’s ”about a man whose entire life is a series of phoney arrangements: his marriage, his work, his sexual escapades and his friendships”, to quote the synopsis of the BFI CD-ROM. Kazan’s ultra sharp dialogue is delivered with gusto by top performers. The film is marred by clumsy and overdone satire, awkward hallucinations and flashbacks, and irritating experiments without style of any kind. In many ways it’s terribly dated, but still retaining a sense of epic vision, especially in the context of America, America. Together they are a great counterpart to the Godfather trilogy.
