This could not be further from the truth with Mohsen Makhmalbaf ’s Hello Cinema. It is a witty and formally interesting documentary (or fiction) film about love and longing for fame, as well as a tribute to 100 years of cinema."

"Hundreds of people respond to Makhmalbaf ’s notice looking for actors for a new project. He seizes the opportunity and decides to make a film about the auditions. This creates a bunch of stories, some of which are humorous and others tragic. Everyone dreams about becoming a movie star but there are radical differences in their reasons for this. Some do it for the love of cinema, others for the love of something else and to break free from their environment in some way. Actually, one would happily just list the on-screen events here, at the same time wishing that all the hundreds of people had an equal amount of screen time."

AA: A multilayered allegory of the society of spectacle and the power of the director-dictator.

"Dedicated to the Centenary of the Cinema", Mohsen Makhmalbaf's semi-documentary belongs to the achievements of lasting value created around the jubileum year 1995, together with the marvellous BFI Century of Cinema film series with contributions from Nagisa Oshima, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, George Miller, and others.

The sole event of the movie is a huge audition. Like Federico Fellini (in L'intervista etc.), Makhmalbaf revels in such an occasion to meet a wide range of humanity, not discriminating anybody. This audition begins with a blind actor who loves cinema above all. We meet a female aspirant who wants to participate in a film invited to Cannes so that she can get a passport and reunite with her boyfriend who has moved abroad.

Participants of the audition need to be able to laugh and cry at will in 30 seconds. We see song numbers, fights and massacre scenes, where the director-dictator "slaughters" everybody mercilessly. Tables turn, and two female aspirants occupy the chair of the director-dictator as ruthlessly as Makhmalbaf himself.

All the excitement reflects the vast and genuine popularity of the cinema in Iran. 5000 aspirants came to the audition having read a tiny notice in the newspaper. The giant crowd crashed the studio gate.

In the Q & A Mohsen Makhmalbaf saw Salaam Cinema as a work between documentary and fiction and as one of his contributions about society in general, exposing the thin ice covering the huge ocean of barbarism. "Democracy is still in its childhood. We should care about our behaviour".

Elokuva elokuvasta on aihe, joka on aiheuttaa varmasti monella ihmisellä mielikuvan itseään täynnä olevasta tekijästä, joka haluaa todistaa omaa taiteellista nokkeluuttaan. Mohsen Makhmalbafin Hello Cinema on kaukana tästä. Se on nokkela ja muodoltaan mielenkiintoinen dokumentti (vai fiktio?) kuuluisuudenkaipuusta ja rakkaudesta, mutta kaiken lisäksi myös kunnianosoitus 100:lle vuodelle elokuvaa.

Satoja ihmisiä vastaa Makhmalbafin ilmoitukseen, jossa etsitään näyttelijöitä uuteen projektiin. Hän käyttää tilaisuutta hyväkseen ja päättää tehdä koekuvauksista elokuvan. Tästä syntyy joukko tarinoita, osa humoristisia osa traagisia. Kaikilla ihmisillä on unelmia elokuvatähteydestä, mutta syyt ovat radikaalisti erilaisia. Jotkut tekevät sen rakkaudesta elokuvaan, toiset taas rakkaudesta johonkin toiseen ja päästäkseen jonkinlaiseen vapauteen ympäristöstään. Oikeastaan tekisi vain mieli luetella elokuvan tapahtumia ja samalla myös toivoisi, että kaikki sadat ihmiset saisivat ruudulla yhtä paljon aikaa.

Erityisesti kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota Makhmalbafin rooliin ohjaajana. Tapa, jolla hän manipuloi ihmisiä, on hypnotisoiva ja välillä melkein hyvän maun rajat ylittävä. Hän esittää kysymyksiä taiteilijan hyvyydestä ja niistä uhrauksista joita sen vuoksi ollaan valmiita tekemään. Vastaukset, mikäli sellaisia on, ovat hankalia eivätkä suinkaan yksiselitteisiä. (JL)
