AA: Is Sacha Guitry a man we love to hate or hate to love? That is the question. I started viewing MUBI's Guitry selection, a digest from Gaumont's recent Sacha Guitry – L'âge d'or (1936–1938) collection, with Faisons un rêve, for me a parody of the boulevard theatre and a self-parody of the motormouth himself. Conscious or not? Does it matter?

A counterpart to Guitry in the cinema might be the rooster Foghorn Leghorn in Warner Bros. cartoons created by Robert McKimson and voiced by Mel Blanc. With his ponderous lectures Foghorn Leghorn foiled Henery Hawk's attempts to raid the henhouse. Guitry invariably casts himself in the role of the great seducer. Might the agenda of his monologue marathons be to exhaust his victims?

The title of the film is The New Testament. The message of the New Testament in the Bible can be crystallized in one word, "love". In Sacha Guitry's Testament love is absent.

Of course, the title is a wordplay, and what is meant is the last will and testament, an inexhaustible theme for drama. Even in the most conventional detective plot like Knives Out it can still be fresh and original.

Sacha Guitry's complicated intrigue is based on unmasking. All characters are caught off guard except the mastermind (Guitry). All secrets are revealed, and there is a shock after another, but despite the scandalous revelations, appearances are kept, and Guitry succeeds in enforcing his will: his mistress and secret daughter become equal inheritors with his wife who has a lover.

At times the tale may look like a self-glorification of unreconstructed male chauvinism. But Le nouveau testament is equally a merciless satire of the vainglorious and hypocritical lawyer. From the start, he is portrayed as someone who misunderstands and misrepresents everything. He condemns his wife's affairs with young men while himself keeping a mistress and trying to smuggle his secret daughter into the family.

A black and heartless comedy in which the absence of feelings and illusions provides surprising revelations. Like classics of commedia all'italiana, this comedy is darker than some tragedies. "The Platonic revenge": "I don't dream. Divorce: mad or wise? It is far more cruel not to divorce".

Synopsis

Our take

The second entry in our focus on multitalented artist Sacha Guitry is The New Testament, an elegantly shot comedy that was adapted to the screen from one of the director’s own theater plays. Featuring Guitry’s trademark, beautifully composed long takes, the film is rich in intrigue and light humor.

WIKIPEDIA SYNOPSIS:

Un médecin prospère, rédige un nouveau testament qu'il destine à son notaire. Il y expose les raisons qui l'ont conduit à modifier ses dispositions antérieures : la découverte de l'infidélité de son épouse. Il glisse le testament dans la poche de son veston et sort pour la journée. Lors de l'essayage d'un nouveau costume chez son tailleur, il va oublier ce veston en partant avec le nouveau. Le soir, l'attendent à son domicile, son épouse, un couple d'amis et leur fils qui ont été conviés à diner et s'interrogent sur son retard.

Un employé du tailleur rapporte alors le veston et le remet sans explications au valet de chambre. Ce veston remis d'une manière qui apparait comme mystérieuse augmente l'inquiétude de l'épouse qui craignant un suicide, fouille les poches du veston et y trouve le testament.

Bien que celui-ci soit adressé au notaire elle l'ouvre et ces quatre personnes vont découvrir ce dont ils n'auraient pas dû avoir connaissance du vivant du médecin.

L'épouse apprend que son mari a une maitresse et est le père d'une fille qui pourrait être sa nouvelle secrétaire. Elle découvre aussi que son mari est informé de sa liaison avec le fils de ses amis. Elle apprend enfin que la mère de son amant fut vingt ans auparavant la maitresse de son mari.

Le fils apprend que le médecin savait qu'il était l'amant de sa femme et qu'il fut l'amant de sa mère ; la mère que son amie est la maitresse de son fils ; le mari de cette dernière qu'il fut trompé par son épouse et son meilleur ami.

Mais soudain le médecin arrive. Et tous ceux qui, quelques instants auparavant, se montraient bouleversés l'accueillent comme si de rien n'était. Le lendemain apporte une nouvelle révélation et la pièce se conclut en une réflexion désabusée sur l'humaine comédie.
