Erich von Stroheim, dont la carrière de réalisateur était, hélas, à ce moment, terminée, y incarne le même type de personnage, un homme froid, d'une rigidité extrême, misanthrope, victime d'une blessure sentimentale ancienne dont la réouverture le perdra. Stroheim y est grandiose en homme grugé attendant le retour de l'être aimé, un être aimé qui ne reviendra pas. "

AA: Revisited The Great Flamarion which I have reviewed in 2008 in its Finnish dvd edition by Finnkino. I then registered the movie as a meeting of two masters: Anthony Mann on his way up and Erich von Stroheim on his way down, by now typecast to deranged genius roles, yet always bringing a touch of dignity to his performances. The narrative I found a routine triangle tragedy from the circus world. Based on a story by Vicki Baum, the account of one-sided love and extreme humiliation evokes Varieté and The Blue Angel, both starring Emil Jannings. 

The Jannings bravura (same as Welles) was the story of the destruction of a magnificent man, here interpreted by Stroheim. There are two crimes of passion in the film. Mary Beth Hughes is the femme fatale, unworthy of either of the passions or crimes, which is part of her pathetic lure. Her alcoholic husband is played with brio by Dan Duryea in his first Anthony Mann role (soon returning to give a memorable performance in Winchester '73 and also appearing in Thunder Bay).

The Great Flamarion fell into public domain. Anyone who held a print could exploit it, a situation which usually leads to a decline in print quality. The 2008 dvd was neither good or bad.

Today on display was a brilliant Canal Plus digital presentation, based on a master from the British Film Institute. Only fleeting moments were seemingly retrieved from inferior sources.

Musical themes include the mariachi standard "Cielito lindo" (popularized in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza ; film buffs register this as "I'm Driving a Bronson A" sung by Gary Cooper in Desire by Frank Borzage / Ernst Lubitsch). The music of Flamarion's performance is from Franz Lehár's The Merry Widow, „Ja, das Studium der Weiber ist schwer“ aka "Girls, Girls, Girls", in Lubitsch's film adaptation the opening number ("we're an army that never fights wars").
