" Le docteur Pablo Morales est un hédoniste de la petite bourgeoisie de Mexico. Porté sur la bouteille et la bagatelle, Pablo s’adonne également au hobby de la taxidermie. Il possède dans le sous-sol de sa maison une impressionnante collection d’animaux empaillés et de squelettes en tous genres. Il est marié à Gloria, une femme bigote, infirme et aigrie, écœurée par sa passion solitaire et sa joie de vivre. Le couple, au bord de l’implosion, va s’enfoncer dans un abîme de violence mentale et physique. "

AA: A black comedy about the doctor Pablo Morales (Arturo de Córdoba) whose hobbies include taxidermy. Pablo takes good care of his invalid wife Gloria (Amparo Rivelles), and a housemaid, Señorita Castro (Elda Peralta) is of great help to both.
Pablo is a bon vivant who enjoys the good things in life including smoking, drinking and good company in bars. He would like to have an occasional steak, too, but Gloria finds meat horrible and repulsive. Pablo finds his wife sexually attractive, and although Gloria wards him off, Pablo does not pursue affairs on the side.
Gloria is active in religious meetings, and one day she takes from a stuffed jaguar's mouth for religious purposes 1000 pesos that Pablo would like to use to buy a camera. Arturo proposes a separation, but Gloria refuses. Instead, she incites her religious circle against Arturo, with eager support from her sister.
Gloria insists that Pablo must disinfect his hands and tries to poison Arturo's pet hawk with strychnine. It turns out that Gloria has refused medical aid to cure her and that Arturo has generously carried all financial responsibility. One day, Gloria cries in horror and emerges with her face badly bruised. Everybody believes that Pablo has beaten his wife.
Then Gloria vanishes, and there is a human skeleton in the taxidermy window. Pablo is arrested, and there is a trial. Forensic examiners testify that the skeleton is not of Señora Morales but a compilation of various skeletons.
Arturo visits Padre Artemio Familiar, Gloria's best friend, and gives his confession, but because of the law of silence, the padre can never reveal the truth.
There is some of the strychnine-spiked drink left, and Arturo's drinking buddies unwittingly use it to toast his newfound freedom. In the finale, five coffins are being carried to the cemetery. The camera turns upside down, and we see the church tower pointing to the ground.
The movie is an adaptation of Arthur Machen's short story "The Islington Mystery" (1927), inspired by the true case of Dr. Crippen (1862-1910), who was executed for murder by hanging, but there are still questions about the verdict. The case has inspired several films with Dr. Crippen in their titles but also other films such as Robert Siodmak's The Suspect (US 1944) and Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (US 1954).
There are also connections with Luis Buñuel's El (MX 1953), also starring Arturo de Córdoba, but the tables are turned. In Buñuel's movie, the husband is the repressed, religious bigot, and in González's film it is the wife. A special habit of Gloria's is crossing her ankles if someone touches her. In El the variation of the foot obsession is different. We are left thinking about a possible psychosomatic background to Gloria's invalidization.
Skeleton of Mrs. Morales is a marriage story dramatized as a murder mystery. A story about marriage hell brought to a literal conclusion. The screenplay is intelligent, the performances are engaging, and González directs the volatile mix of tragedy, comedy and the macabre with an assured touch.

El esqueleto de la señora Morales est une comédie noire mexicaine réalisée par Rogelio A. González et sortie en 1960. Il s'agit d'une adaptation de la nouvelle britannique The Islington Mystery d'Arthur Machen, publiée en 1927, elle-même inspirée de l'histoire vraie de Hawley Harvey Crippen.
Le film a été classé 19e sur la liste des 100 meilleurs films mexicains de tous les temps, publiée en juillet 1994 dans le magazine Somos d'après l'opinion de 25 critiques et spécialistes du cinéma au Mexique.
Synopsis
Pablo Morales est un joyeux taxidermiste qui vit avec sa femme Gloria, amère, infirme, obsessionnelle et extrêmement religieuse. Pablo veut avoir des enfants, mais Gloria n'en veut pas. Gloria repousse constamment ses avances amoureuses et le rabaisse constamment en lui disant qu'il pue comme un animal mort. Sa principale raison d'être semble être d'ennuyer malicieusement son mari. Pablo a économisé de l'argent pour acheter un appareil photo, mais Gloria prend l'argent que Pablo économisait et en fait don à l'église, ce qui entraîne un conflit avec le prêtre local. Gloria accuse à tort Pablo d'ivrognerie et d'abus. Pablo obtient son appareil photo, mais Gloria fait exprès de le détruire, ce qui s'avère être la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase. Pablo se venge en l'empoisonnant. Il dissèque ensuite le corps de Gloria et place son squelette dans la vitrine de son magasin. La police et le prêtre local ont des soupçons et Pablo est jugé, mais il réussit à échapper à la justice des hommes (mais pas à celle de Dieu).

The marriage between Gloria and Pablo Morales is hell. The woman torments her husband with her jealousy, complaints and an extreme puritanism that borders on obsession. Since Gloria doesn’t want to separate and Pablo no longer knows what to do, the situation becomes untenable. One day, Pablo announces to his acquaintances that Gloria has gone to Guadalajara to visit an aunt. However, in his taxidermist’s laboratory, Pablo keeps a skeleton that he treats as if it were his wife, the priest Artemio will be the one who suspects that Dr. Morales has murdered his wife and will seek justice in court. However, the widowed man seems to have achieved the perfect crime.
